Mr Wilkinson, Mrs Mountford and the year 3 team (Mrs Rabia, Mrs Ahalil, Mrs Akhtar and Wiss Walsh) extend a warm welcome to you all as you transition to year 3 at Alexandra Junior School, and what an exciting autumn term we have planned for your child!
In English, we will be reading, Bedtime for Monsters by Ed Verve, and After the Fall by Dan Santat two picture books which we are sure your child will enjoy. Through the colourful and vivid illustrations and differentiated texts we will bring the story to life through both talk and drama activities in order to inspire writing opportunities. Children will retell the story in their own words and innovate characters.
In maths, we will be focusing on place value and number. This is a very important step in our learning journey before we move on to addition and subtraction later in the term. There will be lots of exciting, engaging practical activities as well as lots of opportunities for further challenging within lessons.
Our geography topic this half term is local studies. We will look at maps of our school and local area, and discuss changes over time. We will also go on a walk around Normacot looking at key landmarks. We are very excited to look at key areas and then draw them on a map.
Then we will study the Stone Age to the Bronze age as part of our history unit. We will go on an exciting trip to Tatton Park for a Stone Age workshop. Here we will explore early human history and the changes in Britain during the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age in an exciting, hands-on workshop. We will learn about how we find out about the past by the messages left behind by these prehistoric communities and examine what life was like for people living at the time and how technology, lifestyle and community changed between the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age periods. Our first science topic is ‘Animals including Humans’. We will identify and name parts of the skeletal system, look at how much sugar is in our food and even create a moving model of an articulated hand. Click on the link to find out more about animals including humans and help your child to become a science expert before lessons begin.
In your child’s reading diary, you will find their login details for Times Tables Rock Stars and Google Classroom. We can’t wait to set the children times tables and homework challenges which they will be able to access from home! Homework will be set via the Google Classroom account every Friday and will be checked for completion on a Tuesday. We will have times table battles within our year group and across the school, so please encourage your child to access this app at home so they can become times table superstars! Remember the more you go on the site, the more coins you earn!
Please could we remind you that spellings are given out weekly, on a Tuesday. Children will be tested on the spelling patterns the following Monday.
There is an expectation to read at least 3 times a week, let’s be the year group with the highest word count this year! Remember the more times you read, the more Brag Tags you will earn!
Year 3 PE is on a Wednesday. Please send your child to school in an appropriate PE kit on this day. We do go outside in all weathers so please send them in prepared.
Finally, we cannot wait to celebrate the learning journey of the year 3 cohort as they begin to excel in their educational journey at AJS.
