Music Vision

(Subject Lead: Mrs S. Wilton)

At Alexandra Junior School, our vision is to provide opportunities for all children to express themselves by being able to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical genres, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Integrated within our daily life is our Alexandra Promise to our pupils and our school context-based drivers, the 5Es (Excel- be awesome, Embrace yourself, Explore the world, Engage with others, Express yourself). Music is a vehicle for personal expression, and it can play an important part in the personal development of individuals and echoes the values of our 5Es. Music also plays an important part in helping children feel part of a community.

We aim to make music an enjoyable learning experience and encourage children to participate in a variety of musical activities. We provide opportunities for all children to sing and to listen to and appreciate different styles and genres of music. At Alexandra Junior School it is our belief that all children have an equal right to a broad and balanced curriculum, which enables them to meet their full potential. Through our teaching we provide learning opportunities that enable all pupils to make good progress. We strive hard to meet the needs of those pupils with special educational needs, those with disabilities, those who are deemed more-able and talented and those learning English as an additional language, and we make all reasonable adjustments to achieve this.

By providing these opportunities, we ensure that our children are motivated, confident, life-long learners who will continue to express themselves, way beyond their time at our school.

We welcome you to review the Curriculum and Pedagogy documents to see how the Music curriculum is put into practice.

Subject Lead Statement

I would like to introduce myself as Mrs. Wilton, music subject lead here at Alexandra Junior School. We believe that music is an important and creative subject, which develops musical knowledge and skills, but also a sense of self and individuality. We all have different tastes towards music and a piece of music evokes different responses in us all. Music as Alexandra Junior School gives our children the opportunity to explore and evelop their sense of self and also their communication of their own thoughts and feelings to their peers.

We aim to make music lessons at Alexandra Junior school to be fun, modern and wide ranging in their use of musical genres. Our online scheme supports and challenges children who are working at different levels, enabling the teachers to ensure that the learning is pitched appropriately for each activity. In our lessons, we utilise individual, group and whole class activites as a way to explore muscial knowledge and skills. Discussion, improvisation and performance are all important steps for our children in music lessons; they also help us to build on important transferable life skills, such as cooperation and communication.

At Alexandra Junior School, we offer the children opportunities to showcase their musical capabilities through performance, shows and concerts, both at school and at other venues. Rehearsing, performing and self-evaluation are important parts of being a musician and having an appreciation of music. We are lucky to have the support of City Music Service, who offer support and training, together with platforms to join in performances across the city (such as The Recorder Festival)

Music is a proud part of the Alexandra experience and we hope that this continues to grow in the future and prepare our children for life after Alexandra too.
